6 Mothers In The Bible & The Important Lessons They Teach Kids
There are many mothers in the Bible whose lives have powerful lessons for kids. Some of these women made mistakes, others were super smart while others experienced suffering. If these mothers could share lessons from their lives with our kids what would these lessons be? In this post we will visit with six mothers in the bible and ask them to share lessons from their lives that will help our children live Godly lives. I hope you will stick around as we explore the lives of Eve, Jochebed, Hannah, Naomi, Abigail and Elizabeth.
What Does the Bible Say About Mothers?
Mothers are extremely important. Proverbs 31 gives a detailed description of what a godly mother looks like. Proverbs 1:8 tells us that mothers also have a responsibility to advise their children
“My child, listen to your father’s teaching.
And do not forget your mother’s advice.”
A mother should correct and give punishment to children when needed as stated in Proverbs 29:15
“Punishment and correction make a child wise.
If he is left to do as he pleases, he will disgrace his mother.”
So, since a mother’s role involves sharing Godly advise, let’s move on and hear from our mothers in the bible.
Why A Daughter Needs A Mom
The picture book “Why A Daughter Needs A Mom” is designed for kids ages 3-7. It is a touching story that tells all the ways a mother will help a girl grow and it reminds her of the special bond only she can have with her mother. This book has great illustrations and heartwarming rhymes about the moments mothers and daughters share, and is a great story to connect mother and daughter together.
Mothers In The Bible: Eve
Eve was the first woman on the earth and she was the first mother. Eve was tempted by a snake and made a decision that changed the history of the entire world. We find this story in Genesis 3
” Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”
Mothers In The Bible: Eve’s Lessons for Kids
A key lesson from the story of Eve is that we should not let what seems to be good in our eyes prevent us from doing what God says. Proverbs 3:7 says
“Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil”
The second lesson from Eve for kids is that all our actions have consequences so we should always think before we act and not get enticed by whatever temptations come our way.
Mothers In The Bible: Jochebed
In Exodus 2 we find the story of baby Moses who was put in the river by his mother as a means of hiding him as the command had been given to kill all the boy babies. Exodus 2:3 says
“And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.”
What a method for a mother to use to keep her child safe. God blessed this method as he had a special plan for Moses and so the baby was seen by the Pharoah’s daughter and with her permission, Moses’ sister got her a nurse who was Jochebed, So Jochebed, got paid to care for her own child, Moses. What a God, what an awesome story of God’s protection.
Mothers In The Bible: Jochebed’s Lessons for Kids
A great lesson from Jochebed: one of the great mothers in the bible, is that when challenging situations arise, don’t give up. Think of a plan and do the best you can. When you have done your best leave the rest to God. Jochebed did the best she could. She kept Moses at home as long as she could and then when she could no longer keep him safe this way, she made a basket as “waterproof” as she could and she laid him in it while his sister watched from the river bank. Don’t give up when you meet a challenge in any area of your life instead do the best you know how to in that situation.

Mothers In The Bible: Hannah
Of the mothers in the bible, Hannah is one of the most remembered. She could not have children and was mocked and treated badly by her husbands other wife who had babies. When she went to the temple she prayed for a child. She prayed so passionately that the priest thought she was drunk. Hannah promised God that if he gave her a son, she would give him back to serve the Lord.
1 Samuel 1: 11 says:
“And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life”
When Hannah finally had a son, she named him Samuel and she brought him to the temple to serve the Lord.
Mothers In The Bible: Hannah’s Lessons for Kids
From Hannah kids learn the principle taught in 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Pray without ceasing”
If there is something you need keep praying to God about it.
Another great lesson from Hannah is faithfulness in what we say. Hannah made a promise and kept her promise. Remind kids that when they make a promise, its important to keep their word.
Mothers In The Bible: Naomi
Naomi was a mother who lost her husband and her two sons to death. She however was such a mother to her daughter in laws that when she decided to return to her homeland one of her daughter in laws; Ruth decided she would not leave her. Ruth 1:16 says:
“And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.”
You can watch the story of Ruth and Naomi in our Bible stories for Kids Bible in a year series on our youtube channel.
Mothers In The Bible: Naomi’s Lessons for Kids
From the life of Naomi kids can learn to always treat others as they would like to be treated. If Naomi had not treated her daughters in law with love and respect they would not want to be around her. The fact that her daughter in laws wanted to stay with her shows that she had demonstrated Christ to them in her actions.
Mothers In The Bible: Abigail
We find the story of Abigail in 1 Samuel 25. Abigail was married to Nabal. David and his men were hungry as he was on the run from King Saul. David sent messengers to Nabal to seek provisions but Nabal replied:
“Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be” 1 Samuel 25:10-11
David was angered by this response and decided to attack Nabal. Nabal’s wife, Abigail, found out what happened and before David and his men reached to attack Nabal, Abigail intervened. She rode and brought two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs for David and his men. She also pleaded with David not to harm Nabal.
Mothers In The Bible: Abigail’s Lessons for Kids
Abigail’s actions prevented the possible death of Nabal. Her lesson for kids is that they should try to be peacemakers. As the bible says in Romans 12:18
“Do your best to live in peace with everyone.”
As you aim to help your kids be at peace you can take a look at our post on ways for kids to have peace in Jesus.
Mothers In The Bible: Elizabeth
Elizabeth was old and she could not have babies but God performed a miracle and she became a mother. This is what the bible says in Luke 1: about Elizabeth and her husband.
“And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.”
Mothers In The Bible: Elizabeth’s Lessons for Kids
From the life of Elizabeth we learn that nothing is impossible with God. Though Elizabeth was old, God still was able to make her a mother. We also learn that we should do what God commands. Isn’t it lovely when God can say that we are do what is right?
