Bedtime Story About Kindness and Confidence: Part 1

Liam closed his locker and started down the hallway, his shoulders hunched. Another kid—Jason—had teased him again yesterday.

“You’re such a goof, Liam,” Jason had smirked in front of his friends. “No wonder you sit alone.”

Liam’s face burned with shame. He loved drawing dinosaurs and space rockets. He thought he was good at art. But after Jason’s words, he felt small. Useless.

His mom noticed the change that evening at dinner. Liam pushed his broccoli around his plate. When his dad asked about his day, he said, “Nothing much.”

But later, as he got ready for bed, he couldn’t stop replaying Jason’s words.

In bed, he hugged his teddy bear, Rocket. “Maybe they’re right,” he whispered. “Maybe I am a goof.”

His mom came in and sat on the edge of his bed. She brushed his hair back softly.

“Liam, what’s on your heart?”

He hesitated. Then, in a rush, he burst out, “Jason said I’m a goof…I’m not good at anything…”

Mom wrapped her arms around him. “I’m so sorry you had to hear that,” she said. “You’re not a goof.”

She opened his Bible to Psalm 139:14 and read:

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

She tapped the words. “God says you’re made with wonder—just how you are. His masterpiece.”

Liam sniffled. “Really?”

“Yes. Even when others say harsh things, that doesn’t change who God made you to be.”

He stared at the verse. Then, tentatively, asked, “Can I pray?”

“Always,” Mom smiled.

He closed his eyes.

“God, help me believe You think I’m special—even when others say mean things. Help me be brave and kind. Amen.”

The next day at school, Jason spotted Liam and sneered, “Hey goofball…”

Inside, Liam’s chest clenched. He felt the familiar sting.

Then he thought of Psalm 139:14. Of his mom’s prayer.

He straightened his shoulders and replied, “That’s mean, Jason. Please stop.”

Some kids looked surprised. Jason froze.

Before he could respond, the teacher Mr. Carter walked by.

“Mr. Carter, Jason isn’t being nice,” Liam said calmly.

Jason mumbled and walked away.

Mr. Carter gave Liam an encouraging nod.

Phew, that felt hard but Liam felt happy that he had stood up for himself.

At recess, a classmate, Sarah, dropped her colored pencils. They scattered across the floor.

Quick as a flash, Liam sprinted over and helped her gather them.

“Thanks, Liam,” Sarah said, smiling. “You’re a great helper.”

Liam’s heart felt warm. He realized he didn’t need everyone to like him—just to be true to who God made him to be.

That night, Liam and Mom sat together in his room.

“Did you say something to Jason?” Mom asked gently.

“I did.” He paused. “It was scary… But it felt good to stand up and not be mean back.”

Mom hugged him tight. “You showed courage—and kindness. That’s someone pleasing God.”

Liam pulled out his Bible and reread Psalm 139:14. This time, it felt like truth inside him.

He closed the book and looked at Mom. “God made me special, and I can trust Him.”
